Paper vs. Tablet in the Barn – How Much Time Are You Really Losing on Transcribing Notes?

In the profession of a hoof trimmer, not only is the precision of the procedures key, but also the accuracy of the maintained documentation. For years, the standard was recording diagnoses on paper, which entailed numerous inconveniences. Recently, however, a digital solution has been implemented – the Cownt application. It has been tested under barn conditions, and the conclusions regarding efficiency are self-evident.

How is Time Wasted with the Traditional Method?

When documentation is maintained in the traditional manner, data is first recorded manually on paper. This often takes place under difficult conditions – notes are made hastily with soiled hands, which frequently results in illegibility. However, this is not the end of the process. Upon returning from the field, this same data must be transcribed into a computer so that a report can be sent to the producer.

It is estimated that with the “paper” method, the mere act of noting the claw status, followed by the manual entry of this data into a system or spreadsheet, consumes on average 3 to 5 minutes per head (accounting for the time required for subsequent digitization and error correction). This time is irretrievably lost on administrative tasks, rather than on regeneration or work with the next herd.

Recording in 30 Seconds – How is it Done in Cownt?

Following the implementation of the Cownt application, a significant improvement in efficiency was noted almost immediately. The recording process has been reduced to the absolute minimum. Directly following the trimming procedure:

  1. The Cow ID is entered.
  2. The corresponding claws are selected on the touchscreen.
  3. Diagnosed disorders are selected from a preset list.

The entire recording procedure (excluding the trimming itself) is concluded within a time of maximum one minute. Subsequently, the operator moves on to the next animal. No additional “clean” transcription of notes is required.

Effortless Reporting

A significant facilitation is also the manner in which information is conveyed to the client. Upon completion of the work, the report is generated automatically. Depending on the producer’s preference:

  • Documentation is shared in PDF format.
  • Data is exported to an Excel file.
  • Direct access is granted to portal.cownt.app.

Thanks to this last solution, the full history of trimming performed on the farm is visible to the producer at any moment, and necessary reports can be generated by them independently.

In summary, thanks to the digitization of the process, the time spent on bureaucracy can be reduced several-fold, while the professionalism of the services provided will significantly increase.
